Method

How the test works.

Quotient is built the way reasoning tests have been built for decades: several short subtests, items that grow harder, a time limit, and scores standardised against a norm group.

Someone at a pale desk in morning light works through geometric figures on a tablet.

Four subtests

  1. 01

    10

    Matrices

Each grid follows rules along its rows and down its columns: a shape, a number of figures, a fill, a turn. The bottom-right cell is missing. Pick the figure that fits every rule.

  2. 02

    7

    Number series

Each series follows one rule. It may add, multiply, grow its steps, or weave two series together. Find the rule and the missing number.

  3. 03

    7

    Spatial

Shapes made of squares are turned, never flipped. Picture the shape turning in your head and find the one that matches. Watch out for mirror images.

  4. 04

    6

    Verbal

Analogies, the odd one out and short logic. Read every option before you choose.

From answers to a score

  1. 01

    Fresh questions every time

Matrices, number series and spatial items are generated from rules for each test, at set levels of difficulty; verbal items come from a reviewed question bank. No two tests are the same, and no answer can be looked up.

  2. 02

    Scored on the server

Your browser only ever sees the questions. The answers are checked on our server, and your result is sealed until you open the report.

  3. 03

    Raw score to scaled score

Right answers are counted per subtest and compared with the norm group: a scaled score of 10 is average, 7 to 13 covers two thirds of people.

  4. 04

    Scaled to IQ

The total is placed on the IQ scale, where 100 is average and 15 points is one standard deviation, with a 90 % confidence interval from the test's reliability.

What it can't tell you

  • It isn't a clinical, educational or legal assessment, and can't diagnose anything.
  • A single sitting is affected by sleep, stress, the device and distractions.
  • It measures reasoning under time pressure, not creativity, knowledge, wisdom or character.
  • Scores from different tests aren't directly comparable.

Quotient measures reasoning under time pressure. It is not a clinical or diagnostic assessment, and its score is no substitute for a test given in person by a qualified psychologist.
